Alexander Albon believes that the Mercedes engines of Williams played a significant role in the negotiations for his new contract. The British-Thai driver recently extended his contract with the Grove-based team for another two years. The collaboration between Williams and Mercedes is of great importance to Albon, who has confidence in the new power unit that the Germans are developing for 2026.
Albon explained in an interview why he chose Williams again. He stated that not only the long-term plans of the British racing team have convinced him – the Mercedes engines that have been in the cars since 2014 also weigh heavily for the 28-year-old driver. In 2026, new rules regarding the power units of Formula 1 will be introduced.
“Mercedes has shown so many times that it is one step ahead of the rest during major regulatory changes,” said Alex Albon. “That’s not to say that other teams can’t deliver a strong package as well. Everyone will undoubtedly invest a lot of money in a new engine, so they can make a flying start. But I think Mercedes is always a safe choice.”
Albon is not the only one who has high expectations of the Mercedes arsenal. Regular driver George Russell is also convinced that his team will be well-prepared in 2026. The British driver recently said that he hopes for a turnaround with the new regulations, where the German racing team proves itself to be the best in the development race, just like in 2014.
