Oscar Piastri is not overly concerned about McLaren’s ongoing misfortune with their motorhome. The team is facing repairs for the second time in four races, but according to the Australian, it doesn’t affect their performance. Piastri even points out that Lando Norris delivered an excellent performance when the motorhome was damaged in Barcelona.
After a fire broke out in McLaren’s motorhome during the Grand Prix weekend in Barcelona, the team’s bad luck continues in Hungary. A severe storm caused the roof of the building to be blown off. However, Piastri is not overly concerned.
“The last time we had trouble with the motorhome, when a fire broke out, Lando (Norris) took pole position. So maybe it’s a good sign,” jokes the young Australian during the press conference. “However, it doesn’t change much for us. Unfortunately, we’ve experienced it before, so maybe it’s actually a bad sign. Definitely a sign that we need to arrange another motorhome.”
McLaren Lacks Experience
McLaren’s racing stable is not only plagued by accommodation issues, but the British team also experienced a series of missed opportunities in the last race. Piastri candidly admits that a number of misjudgments in Silverstone kept both McLaren drivers from victory. According to the driver, this was due to a lack of experience within the British team. “We are competing against teams that have been in this position (at the front of the F1 field) for longer. It’s been a while for our team. It’s not an excuse, but we simply have less experience.”
Therefore, McLaren is not planning to change its approach for the time being. “For the most part, it has worked well for us,” says Piastri. “Of course, we have learned a few things in the meantime, but our approach is working. It’s nice to be so close to a victory, but with a grid that is so close together, it’s just not easy.”
