Rwanda is the latest nation to join the queue to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the near future. The Central African country has solid plans to construct a new, permanent circuit near its under-construction national airport.
The initial exploratory talks have already taken place. Representatives from the commercial rights holder FOM have extensively studied the location for a new circuit in Rwanda and the associated plans. The African country is seriously working to secure a spot on the calendar in the short term. It stands an excellent chance: the African continent is the only one where Formula 1 does not yet visit and is therefore high on the wish list. Furthermore, the FOM scouts are very impressed with the ambitious plans.
“They are very serious,” said FOM CEO Stefano Domenicali in a conversation with motorsport.com. “They have presented a good plan and we have a meeting with the organization at the end of September.” Earlier this year, there was also a meeting of the African delegation with the motorsport federation (FIA) in Monaco.
The circuit will be built near Bugesera International Airport, the under-construction airport of Rwanda, located 25 kilometers from the capital Kigali (1.7 million inhabitants). This billion-dollar project is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2028.
