Oscar Piastri reveals that he clinched his very first Grand Prix victory while recovering from a broken rib. The Australian shared in an Instagram post that his ‘rib is enjoying the break’, following a successful first half of the season. Piastri claimed his first-ever Grand Prix win in Hungary.

Piastri disclosed in an Instagram post that he broke his sixth rib. “First part of the season is over,” wrote the McLaren driver in the post. “First GP win. First broken bone. Rib is enjoying the break.”

Oscar Piastri’s Mysterious Injury and Controversial Victory

Oscar Piastri, the McLaren driver, did not disclose how he sustained his injury. However, a photo on his Instagram page revealed that Piastri was in the hospital for an X-ray scan on July 8, 2024, a day after the Grand Prix of Great Britain. The race in Hungary, and Piastri’s first Grand Prix victory, was two weeks later.

Controversial Team Order and Victory

The young Australian’s Grand Prix victory, in addition to a broken rib, was accompanied by a controversial team order from McLaren. Lando Norris was leading the Hungarian race in the final stages, but stepped aside for Piastri. The British driver had earlier in the race placed an undercut on his Australian teammate, but Norris decided to let Piastri take the victory.
