Toto Wolff has responded to Christian Horner’s comments about the future of Mercedes driver George Russell. The Red Bull team boss expressed interest in collaborating with Russell once his contract with Mercedes expires. According to Wolff, Horner’s statement was merely a ploy to “stir the pot”.

George Russell’s current contract with Mercedes is set to expire at the end of 2025, leaving the British driver’s future in Formula 1 uncertain after the next season. The future line-up of Red Bull is also not yet confirmed, particularly due to Sergio Pérez’s long-standing underperformance.

During the weekend in Singapore, Red Bull team boss Horner indicated his interest in working with Russell. “George Russell’s contract ends next year. It would be foolish not to consider this,” he told Sky Sports F1.

It didn’t take long for Horner’s comments to reach Mercedes team boss Wolff, and the Austrian didn’t mince his words in response. According to George Russell‘s current team boss, Horner made the remarks solely to provoke. “Christian is always trying to stir things up. It’s part of the game,” Wolff responds.

George is a Mercedes Driver

In 2025, Russell will be on the grid alongside Mercedes talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Wolff also keeps the door ajar for Max Verstappen, should the Dutchman consider a switch. However, Wolff dares to make a small promise to Russell. “George is a Mercedes driver, has always been, and hopefully will always remain so. We have a long contract with him.”
