Fernando Alonso appears to be temporarily setting aside his dream of winning the Triple Crown. The Spanish driver is only one victory away from achieving this prestigious title in motorsports, with the Indianapolis 500 being the only race left to conquer. However, he seems to be more focused on securing his third world championship in Formula 1.
Among all current Formula 1 drivers, Alonso is the closest to securing the coveted Triple Crown. He has already won the Grand Prix of Monaco and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with only the Indianapolis 500 left to win. Alonso made attempts to win this race in 2017, 2019, and 2020, but fell short each time.
“I’ve tried the Indy 500 three times and haven’t succeeded. It’s the only one left, but at this moment, it’s not in my plan,” reveals Alonso. Instead of the Indy 500, the Spanish driver is focusing on another goal. “I am very focused on Formula 1 for the next two or three years. I want to win a third world title.”
Alonso is uncertain if he will attempt to win the Indy 500 after his Formula 1 career, stating, “the amount of learning I would have to do again would be a bit too much. I can’t say with 100% certainty, but it would be too much, and as I said, I have other goals in life as well.”
New Goal
The Spanish world champion also reveals his preferred goal to achieve after his Formula 1 days. “I think my next biggest challenge will be the Dakar Rally,” Alonso discloses. “If I can win Dakar, it will be a huge personal reward for me. I can win in Formula 1, I can win endurance races, I’ve won Le Mans and Daytona. If I can also win in the rally, it will mean a lot to me as a driver.”
