Last weekend, Valtteri Bottas ventured into uncharted territory by participating in a world championship gravel race for the first time. The race took place in Leuven, Belgium. Prior to the race, Bottas admitted to feeling more nervous than he usually does before an F1 race.

First Participation in World Championship Gravel Race

It was a step outside of his comfort zone for Bottas. After a year of preparations, he made his debut in this discipline. “Last year, I set myself the goal of qualifying, which I achieved this year in a race in South Africa. That’s why I’m here, to participate and enjoy it to the fullest,” the Finn told NOS before the race. We know Bottas as an ambitious man, but he remained realistic about his performance in this new sport. “I’m more nervous than before an F1 race. My first goal is to finish. I also want to enjoy the audience. I will challenge myself and see where I end up.” Unfortunately, Bottas finished 133rd due to a flat tire that needed to be repaired five kilometers before the finish line.

An Escape from the F1 World

Bottas’ busy Formula 1 schedule leaves little room for other activities, but he seizes every opportunity to explore the unfamiliar terrain of the gravel world. “That’s the problem. Of course, I don’t have as much time as the professional cyclists. But when I get the chance, I do my best.” Bottas also sees the gravel races as a welcome distraction from the hectic life in Formula 1. “For me, it’s a great way to escape. It’s completely different,” says Bottas.
