Former team boss Günther Steiner understands why Lewis Hamilton is moving to Italy. The world champion will be leaving Mercedes for Ferrari next season. According to Steiner, Hamilton is seeking a new challenge by becoming a driver for the ‘magical’ Ferrari, and perhaps even aiming for an eighth world title.

Lewis Hamilton will be joining Ferrari in 2025. The seven-time world champion announced the news early in the season, sparking the start of the ‘silly season’. Former Haas team boss Steiner understands why Hamilton is moving to Maranello.

“I think he wants to try to achieve the magical goal of bringing Ferrari back to winning championships. That’s his motivation,” Steiner said in the Beyond the Grid podcast. “Of course, I haven’t spoken to him about it, but I can see that was his motivation to go there and try to bring it (the world title) back.”

Eighth World Title

According to Steiner, Hamilton has already won everything there is to win, and is therefore looking for a new challenge. “(Hamilton probably thinks,) ‘I’m definitely a GOAT (greatest of all time), you know, I’ve won seven championships. What else can I do? I can win my eighth, maybe, if I do well at Ferrari.'”

If Hamilton indeed wins his eighth championship with Ferrari, Steiner believes the Brit has a bright future ahead. “If he wins his eighth, or a championship for Ferrari, that guy ends up in the Vatican!” jokes the former team boss.

The Magic of Ferrari

Furthermore, according to the Italian, Ferrari is a very special team to drive for. “I think it’s just the magic that Scuderia carries with it, and if you get the chance to be a part of it as a driver. He also has a good position, he is very close with Fred Vasseur. They are very close and I think they are trying to do something together and if that works, it should be very cool for both of them.”
