Nico Rosberg, the former German racing driver, cautions Aston Martin not to rely solely on top British designer Adrian Newey. According to Rosberg, a competitive car requires not just a great designer, but also a strong team. This, he believes, is the real challenge for Aston Martin.
In September, Aston Martin announced that Adrian Newey, renowned for designing the dominant Red Bull RB19, will join their team in 2025. However, Nico Rosberg warns that recruiting Newey alone won’t be enough for Aston Martin to compete for the world championship.
“Look at PSG in football,” the German ex-driver tells Sky F1. “They had Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe, all at once. Three of the greatest footballers of all time, and the rest of the team was also very good. Yet, they never won the Champions League. Of course, it’s fantastic to bring on board the greatest geniuses, the best managers. But they still need to work optimally together, because you’re only as good as the whole team works together.”
The Challenge
Aston Martin is heavily investing in their facilities, including a new factory and wind tunnel. According to Rosberg, Aston Martin also needs to invest in the team around Newey. “Of course, Newey can give them a good direction, he can guide them very well, but he still needs the team that excels with him.”
The former Mercedes driver sees this as the biggest challenge for the British racing team. “It will certainly be a challenge for them to integrate and create a family that all works in the same direction,” concludes Rosberg.
