Max Verstappen’s unexpected pole position win in the Qatar Grand Prix qualifiers came as a surprise, even to Dr. Helmut Marko. However, now that Verstappen has found his stride, Marko is confident in a victory on Sunday.
“We’re going from one extreme to the other,” Marko commented in the paddock, reacting to Verstappen’s pole position. The Austrian was referring to the significant performance difference of the RB20 this weekend. When asked if he had anticipated Verstappen’s fastest time in the qualifiers, he replied, “No, but I also didn’t expect us to be so slow on Friday. It’s two extremes.”
The turnaround can be attributed to modifications made to the car. “But also the way we warmed up the tires,” Marko added. Of course, Verstappen’s skills played a significant role, Marko acknowledged. He also noted the improved performance of Verstappen’s teammate. “Sergio Pérez did well with his tenth place,” he said.
