Fernando Alonso has no immediate plans to retire from racing. The Spanish driver reveals when he will know it’s time to hang up his helmet. The arrival of Adrian Newey to Aston Martin in 2025, among other factors, ensures that retirement is not on the horizon just yet.
Fernando Alonso began his Formula 1 career in 2001 and has since started in over four hundred Grand Prix races. The Spaniard has a contract with Aston Martin until the end of 2026, ensuring his presence in Formula 1 for the foreseeable future. Alonso now reveals when he will know it’s time for retirement.
“I think my self-confidence will always be there. Until the day comes when I don’t feel comfortable in the car. If I feel, as you said, slower than my teammates or slower than what I think is possible with the car,” Alonso reveals in the Chequered Flag podcast. “When that day comes, I will probably raise my hand and stop racing, because I no longer enjoy it.”
Better Times Ahead
Alonso’s current team, Aston Martin, had a disappointing season in 2024 following the success of the previous year, finishing in fifth place in the constructors’ championship. “I think we were not super competitive in many races this year with the car’s performance, but we still scored some points that were important for the team to secure this fifth place in the championship,” says the Spaniard.
However, Alonso remains an Aston Martin driver for now. The two-time world champion believes better times are ahead for the British team, thanks to the new factory and the arrival of Adrian Newey in 2025.
