Former Formula 1 driver Marcus Ericsson is once again involved in the premier class of racing. The Swede, who previously drove for the Sauber team, has now been tasked with simulator work for the upcoming eleventh team, Cadillac. The American racing team is set to join the Formula 1 grid for the first time in 2026, and is hoping to get a flying start with its preparations.
While it’s still speculative who will ultimately become the two drivers for Cadillac, Ericsson has already secured the role of simulator driver. The Swedish ex-F1 driver currently competes in the IndyCar series, but thanks to his F1 experience, he can make a valuable contribution to building the Cadillac team. General Motors, Cadillac’s parent company, reached a preliminary agreement with Formula 1 at the end of November.
“My employer, Andretti, asked me to fly to England to test various simulators,” Ericsson shares on the Viaplay podcast. “I will provide feedback so they can choose the right model for the entire organization, for both Formula 1 and IndyCar, as well as other sports cars.”
Simulator Work
The Swedish driver also races in the IndyCar championship for Andretti. According to Ericsson, his work for his employer’s Formula 1 branch is no less important than other test drivers, as the importance of simulators continues to grow. “Simulators have become an integral part of motorsport and I have spent the past winter working on improving my own use,” the Swede continues. “It’s great that they want to use my experience to help.”
