Carlos Sainz Sr., father of the upcoming Williams driver Carlos Sainz Jr, fears that his son is facing a challenging year ahead. Despite the young Sainz’s enthusiasm to join Williams, the rally driver does not forget that the British team finished near the bottom of the championship last year.
Carlos Sainz is starting his new job at Williams after four years at Ferrari. The Spaniard had to make way at Scuderia for Lewis Hamilton. After consulting with several teams, Sainz decided to join Williams as a teammate of Alexander Albon.
Although it is a step back for Sainz to move from top team Ferrari to the British midfield team, father Carlos Sainz Sr. sees how his son is eager to prove himself after a difficult time. “It was hard for him, especially since he was doing well (in 2024), he won two races, right? And Ferrari finished second with him and Charles (Leclerc),” Sainz Sr. tells El Chiringuito.
Difficult Times
The multiple Dakar rally winner saw how his son also had a tough time during negotiations with various teams, including Mercedes and Red Bull. “But once that was over, he embraced the situation and decided to go to Williams. Now I see that he is very excited and eager to start the season. We will see what he is capable of.”
The motivation of the younger Sainz is not in question. However, Sainz Sr. fears that his son will find it difficult at Williams. “It’s going to be a tough year. During the last race, I think Williams qualified sixteenth and eighteenth, (they finished) second to last in the constructors’ championship.”
