Mick Schumacher left Formula 1 at the end of 2022, but he has never completely let go of the premier class. The German, who is currently active in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Alpine, says that the F1 dream is still very much alive. “My dream is my dream,” he emphasizes in a conversation with RTL.
Return Seems Unlikely
Yet, a return seems further away than ever. Schumacher, who raced for Haas in 2021 and 2022, was hoping for a new opportunity in 2025, but saw the available seats pass him by. Mercedes chose Kimi Antonelli, Alpine preferred Jack Doohan, and Sauber bet on Gabriel Bortoleto. This led to a harsh conclusion from Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, who has guided countless talents to Formula 1. “If Schumacher doesn’t get a seat now, then his Formula 1 career is over,” Marko stated. “He should then focus on long-distance racing, where he is successful.”
However, Schumacher himself continues to hold out hope. “When I’m in the WEC environment and when I’m in the car, I’m 100 percent focused on that. But when I’m free and thinking about Formula 1, the dream is still alive. My dream is my dream.”
A Busy Year Behind
Last season, Lewis Hamilton juggled his role as a reserve driver for Mercedes with his WEC program at Alpine. With 24 Formula 1 races and eight WEC weekends, it was a grueling schedule. “It was a tough year. We had many back-to-back race weekends and even as a reserve driver, you have long days. I was quite exhausted by the end of the season,” he said.
This year will be slightly less hectic, as Schumacher is fully focusing on Alpine and his WEC adventure. “It will be a bit quieter. I have more time to sit in the simulator and help Alpine with the development of the cars. This gives me the chance to really focus on the sporting aspect of racing,” the German added.
