A sensational finale to the Australian Grand Prix! After a free pit stop during the safety car, triggered by Fernando Alonso, all drivers opted for slicks instead of intermediates – the track seemed dry enough to take the risk. However, a few laps later, the heavens opened once again. Oscar Piastri skidded off into the grass, while Liam Lawson and Gabriel Bortoleto ended their race with a crash.
No less than six drivers failed to finish the Australian Grand Prix! In succession, Isack Hadjar, Jack Doohan, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, Liam Lawson, and Gabriel Bortoleto crashed. Due to the heavy rain showers towards the end of the race, Oscar Piastri also spun off into the grass – at that time, he was battling for victory in his home race. However, the McLaren driver managed to steer his MCL39 back onto the track.
Lawson and Bortoleto were less fortunate. The slick tyres caused both rookies to crash at the Albert Park Circuit. During a new safety car, the remaining fourteen drivers once again opted for intermediates.
