Alexander Albon is thrilled about his collaboration with his latest Williams teammate, Carlos Sainz Jr. The Spaniard is making his debut for the midfield team in Melbourne, after having driven for top teams Ferrari and McLaren in recent years. Albon, who previously drove for Red Bull, understands what the Spaniard is going through.

Alexander Albon has had several teammates during his time as a Williams driver. The British Thai spent his first year with the midfield team alongside Nicholas Latifi, before the Canadian was replaced by Logan Sargeant. However, the American driver also proved unsuccessful, leading to Franco Colapinto stepping into the Williams halfway through the 2024 season.

In 2025, Albon is on the grid next to Carlos Sainz, after the Spaniard was replaced by Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari. “I think he has a lot of experience and is very good at conveying what he feels in the car and which direction he thinks the car should go,” Albon praises his Spanish teammate. “In many ways, it reminds me of my time at Red Bull and when I joined Williams.”

Returning to a Midfield Team

Sainz is not the first driver to be ‘demoted’ from a top team to a midfield team. Alexander Albon also experienced this when he left the Red Bull family in 2022. “You understand and feel what your car used to do and where the car you’re now driving falls short,” explains the British-Thai driver.

However, Albon believes that Sainz is adapting well and quickly. “I think he has come up to speed with the car relatively easily,” he says. The driver is therefore very pleased to have the Madrid-born racer as his teammate. “We speak the same language. We have the same feedback. The team is doing well, we just respond well to solutions and whatnot. So far, it’s going well.”
