Alex Albon showcased his exceptional skills at the Canadian Grand Prix, starting the race from P10 after a spectacular stunt on Saturday. The Williams driver was on track to score points before being nudged into the wall by Carlos Sainz. Albon described the outcome as ‘frustrating’, especially after recently committing to Williams for an extended period. However, there’s still hope for the British team.
A ‘victim of circumstance’ was how Viaplay described it. Williams’ Alex Albon was having a strong race in Montreal until he was hit by Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard was defending his tenth place against the British-Thai driver but misjudged a wet kerbstone, causing both drivers to be thrown off the track. It was a double DNF for Williams, who had earlier seen Logan Sargeant slide into the wall.
“We weren’t taking too many risks,” Albon told Motorsportweek afterwards. “We were making the right decisions all the time. It was fun to have to fight for the points.” The Williams driver was disappointed that he had to retire early. “When Carlos (Sainz) went off, I thought I could still avoid him,” he continued. “But then he hit the back [of my car]. So frustrating, because we could have scored points anyway.”
Despite the lack of points, Albon can look back positively on the race in Canada. “This is the second race where we could have scored points,” he said optimistically. “Last time we succeeded, this time we were just unlucky. Of course, it also depends a bit on the track. In Barcelona, we can see where we stand again. I’m still hopeful [for 2024]. We haven’t even had that many upgrades yet.”
