Alexander Albon Plans to Forego 2025 Success for Strategic Gains in 2026 with Williams F1 Team

June 19th, 2024, 6:56 AM

Alexander Albon is willing to sacrifice the 2025 season with Williams to be in a better position for 2026. Currently, the Williams team is at the back of the grid, but they are hopeful that the new 2026 regulations will provide an opportunity to advance in the Formula 1 field. Albon also reveals where the FW46 can be primarily improved.

Williams currently stands ninth in the constructors’ championship with two points earned. The once legendary team is not what it used to be, but Williams is hopeful that the upcoming 2026 regulations will allow them to advance in the Formula 1 field. Williams driver, Alexander Albon, is even willing to sacrifice the 2025 season to achieve this.

Albon’s Long-Term Commitment to British Racing Team

“Yes, I would much rather sacrifice 2025 for 2026,” says the British Thai racer, “This is partly due to my long-term contract, which means I’m not so focused on the short term.” Albon signed a multi-year contract with the British racing team in May, ensuring he will also be racing for the team in 2026. “You don’t want short-term success if it’s going to hurt you later. As a team, we need to think more about the future if we want to be at the top,” explains the Williams driver, pointing out that implementing major changes in the team will take time.

Weight Loss is Crucial for Williams

Although Albon is keen to focus on 2026, the team is also still working on the rules for 2025. These rules will remain the same as the 2024 regulations. As a result, the car’s development this year could yield benefits over the next 18 months. “The most important thing for us as a team is to ensure that we meet our weight goals. That would be our biggest step forward,” Albon shares the priorities for Williams. “If we get the basics in that sense in order, we as a team will make a big step for next year.” According to Albon, weight loss is currently more important than the aerodynamic aspect. “We are comparing the two and also looking at what makes financial sense. Losing weight is not cheap.”
