The debate over the reintroduction of V10 engines continues, and Fernando Alonso has also shared his views on the potential plan. Unlike Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, the Spaniard is less enthusiastic about a comeback of the larger power units. “It’s like driving without the halo again,” explains Alonso.

Fernando Alonso is the only driver on the current grid who was already racing in Formula 1 during the heyday of the V10 engines. Both Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem are open to reintroducing the atmospheric engine in the premier class, but the Spaniard is less eager for a comeback.

A Different World

“Of course, I love the V10 and the V8 and the sound that we all miss,” Alonso tells various media. “But we live in a completely different world now. Technology has advanced and we now have incredibly efficient engines that use a third of the fuel than back then. We can’t just go back in time. That’s like driving without the halo again, and making the cars more dangerous again. It makes no sense.”

Earlier, both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton indicated they would support a reintroduction of the V10 engine, provided it runs on sustainable fuel. However, Alonso would rather see motorsport evolve than ‘remain stuck in the past’. Still, the Spaniard leaves the final decision to the governing bodies. “As drivers, we just want to race with the fastest possible cars, regardless of the engine.”
