Pierre Gasly believes that his teammate Esteban Ocon violated the rules of engagement during the Austrian Grand Prix. The two Alpine drivers encountered each other multiple times on the Red Bull Ring, with the highlight being when Ocon pushed his teammate off the track. Gasly hopes to discuss this incident with Ocon.
The relationship between Alpine teammates Ocon and Gasly has been strained in recent races, and the tension continued in Austria. Gasly complained in lap 34 of the Austrian Grand Prix that teammate Ocon was taking too long to overtake Fernando Alonso. Shortly after, Gasly had to veer wide to avoid a collision with Ocon. The two Alpine drivers were at odds throughout the entire race on the Red Bull Ring. According to Gasly, Ocon also broke the rules of engagement that Alpine had established for the two drivers.
“It was intense, and some would say a bit too much,” Gasly reflected on the course of the Austrian race, speaking to the media. “I’m sure the team didn’t like that I had to go wide, because I wasn’t really given any space. It’s never easy, right?” According to Gasly, the rules of engagement from Alpine were clear to Ocon. “It’s something we need to discuss internally, but we’ve already talked about it and we’ll see if we can do anything about it.”
Gasly Satisfied with Results Despite Tensions
Despite Ocon often getting in his way, Gasly is satisfied with his race in Austria. “Aside from that, it was a good race, we did pretty well,” said Gasly. “Looking at the positives, this is our fourth race in a row in the points. Monaco, Canada, Spain, and here [Alpine scored points], which are very different circuits. We seem to be finding consistency and we need to maintain that momentum.”
