Mercedes driver and top talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli will soon be the subject of his own Netflix documentary. The project, titled The Seat, is a co-production of WhatsApp and Mercedes, and follows the remarkable transfer of the young Italian to one of the world’s leading racing teams. The documentary premieres on May 5th and promises to provide a unique insight into the decision-making process of the German racing stable.
In February 2024, Lewis Hamilton announced that he would be leaving Mercedes – after twelve years of loyal service – for Ferrari. Consequently, the Silberpfeilen had to urgently search for a replacement. Who could fill the shoes of a seven-time world champion and holder of numerous records? Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, and Max Verstappen were mentioned, but Toto Wolff placed his trust in Mercedes junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Question Marks
When it was announced that the – at that time – 17-year-old Antonelli was being brought to Mercedes, it raised many questions. The Italian had skipped Formula 3 and had just started his debut year in Formula 2. However, Wolff did not want to risk such top talent falling into the hands of the competition. Through an extensive testing program, Antonelli was rapidly prepared for his eventual debut in Formula 1.
The documentary will not only provide insight into the thought processes of Mercedes – Antonelli’s side will also be highlighted. Viewers will get to know the young driver as his personal life is discussed. After all, Antonelli is combining his first season in Formula 1 with his regular obligations in Italy. Earlier this year, he obtained his driver’s license and he is currently studying for his final exams.
