In its anniversary year, FORMULE 1 Magazine closely followed Max Verstappen on his global journey across 24 stops. Eight editors and three columnists share a personal memory of him from 2024. This time, it’s Gwen Kleverlaan’s turn.
It’s a Thursday afternoon in Monaco. My first Dutch media session with Max Verstappen. As I walk across the large terrace towards the entrance of the floating Red Bull motorhome, I’m in awe: they have actual Formula 1 cars on display here! I snap a few photos for our social media channels here and there, until my colleague nudges me. It’s time to meet the world champion.
We join the rest of the Dutch press at the table. I must admit, I’m a bit nervous at that moment. A rookie, really, a girl among all these experienced journalists. When Max joins us, I feel a sense of pride overriding my nerves, I’ve managed to pull this off. ‘What a normal, polite boy,’ is the first thing that comes to mind. Everything in Monaco is about seeing and being seen, but he’s just sitting there in his jeans and Red Bull shirt. Nothing striking is said, more general matters are discussed. Yes, it’s not going to be an easy weekend for Red Bull and he’s not a fan of street circuits. But such a first encounter leaves an indelible impression.
