Good news for fans of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. Formula 1 confirmed on Wednesday that the Grand Prix will remain on the calendar for the time being. However, the iconic circuit will rotate, although it is not yet known with which other Grand Prix. Formula 1 confirms that races will take place at Spa-Francorchamps in 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031.
The contract extension is partly due to the investments that the organization has made in the circuit over the past few years. Two new grandstands have been added, providing space for an additional ten thousand fans at the circuit. The official press release does not reveal which circuit will host a Grand Prix in 2028 and 2030.
The Belgian Grand Prix has a long history in Formula 1. The race at Spa-Francorchamps has been on the calendar since 1950, the inaugural season of the premier class. The seven-kilometer-long circuit is also popular among the drivers themselves, and includes the iconic sections Eau Rouge and Raidillon. Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, and Max Verstappen have claimed victories at the circuit in Wallonia in the past.
One of the Best Circuits in the World
“The Belgian Grand Prix was one of the races during our first championship in 1950, so at the start of our 75th anniversary year, it is fitting that we can share the news of this significant extension,” said Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in a press release. “Spa-Francorchamps is rightly praised by both drivers and fans as one of the best circuits in the world.”
The Minister of Economy of Wallonia, Pierre-Yves Jeholet, and Spa Grand Prix Chairman Melchior Wathelet are also delighted with the news. “We are both very proud of this renewal (of the contract), which reflects the mutual trust we have built while we have upgraded our infrastructure and attracted a record number of spectators,” said Wathelet. “This contract extension has been made possible again thanks to the support of the Walloon government, but also by the fans of what we consider to be the most beautiful circuit in the world.”
