Ten-time race winner Valtteri Bottas is still hoping for a return to Formula 1, but is also eyeing IndyCar. After a successful career as second fiddle at Mercedes and three unimpressive years at Sauber, the 35-year-old Finn was not offered a contract this year. From the Mercedes reserve bench, he dreams of a return to the premier class, although he is also flirting with the American racing class.

During the test days in Bahrain, Valtteri Bottas was asked about his future in Formula 1. This year he returned to Mercedes as a test and reserve driver. “There are many opportunities on the driver’s market at the moment,” he responded optimistically. “You always keep thinking about that, especially if you stay connected to Formula 1. Next year still feels very far away at the moment,” continued the Finn, who has often been linked to a transfer to the new Cadillac team. “But before you know it, the season is already halfway through. Of course, I have to start thinking about next year, but for now, it’s a bit too early.”

Comeback with Cadillac?

Bottas could not say much about a possible comeback with Cadillac. The American racing team has pledged that it is looking for an experienced driver for its debut. With his 246 Grands Prix and ten race victories, Bottas certainly falls into that category, although he is not the only Formula 1 veteran without a contract. “My goal is to race in Formula 1 in the coming years,” he assured. “So I will have to wait and see, but it does motivate me to work hard. And who knows where that opportunity will present itself. For that reason, it will be an exciting year for me.”

If he doesn’t get another chance in Formula 1, Valtteri Bottas – who wants to keep racing regardless – sees IndyCar as a serious alternative. “The first priority is Formula 1,” he admitted. “But I also have to consider the alternatives. IndyCar would certainly be a good option, although I’m not really thinking about that at the moment. I’m really focusing on Formula 1 right now, but it’s hard to predict the future,” he concluded. “Maybe I’ll be in the same role next year,” he hinted at his reserve role at Mercedes. “At the moment, everything is wide open and I’m just grateful for this opportunity to return to the team.”
