Announced at the end of November, the arrival of the General Motors group, in association with TWG Motorsports, in Formula 1 is now official. The Cadillac brand will line up from 2026 in the Championship, which will therefore count eleven teams.
Years of effort and discussions culminated in a very brief final statement… The official arrival of the General Motors Group in association with TWG Motorsports in F1 from the 2026 season was announced on Friday. “The FIA and Formula 1 can confirm that after the completion of sporting, technical and commercial evaluations, the application of General Motors and TWG Motorsports to bring the Cadillac team into the Formula 1 World Championship from 2026 has been approved,” the statement said in its entirety.
The news had been expected since the end of November, when Formula 1 had already announced that it had reached a principle agreement with the American application. The only surprise in relation to this project, which was born several years ago and has evolved significantly since then, was the total disappearance of Michael Andretti and the name of his team (Andretti Global today) at the end of last year.
The former Indycar and Formula 1 driver, son of the legend Mario Andretti, had originally proposed this but was sidelined in the final stretch after having annoyed various members of the paddock with his attitude and certain approaches.
This will be the first time since the 2016 season that eleven teams will be participating. At that time, Manor Racing was the eleventh entity and notably launched Esteban Ocon that year. The other ten were already present, although some have changed their names, such as Force India becoming Aston Martin, Renault becoming Alpine, and Toro Rosso now known as Racing Bulls.
