Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has provided a significant update on the highly anticipated entry of Cadillac. From 2026, the team – representing parent company General Motors – will be on the grid. After several months of uncertainty, the Americans only need to finalize a few formalities before an eleventh team officially joins Formula 1.

Cadillac was initially set to participate in Formula 1 with Andretti Global. As early as October 2023, participation was approved by the FIA, but just a few months later, the entire project was dismissed by Formula 1. Nevertheless, Andretti tirelessly continued to work on their own team; a headquarters was established in Silverstone, and the team hired several key technicians.

Progress was made at the end of 2024 when Michael Andretti, son of the celebrated champion, stepped down as CEO and General Motors increased its involvement with the team. In November, subsidiary Cadillac and Formula 1 finally reached a principle agreement. The team is allowed to join the premier class in 2026, provided it uses its own powertrain from 2028. For the first two years, the team has already signed a deal with engine supplier Charles Leclerc.A concept image of a Cadillac Formula 1 car (@SeanBullDesign)

‘Cadillac is Ready for the Fight’

Recently, Stefano Domenicali shed some light on the current state of affairs at Cadillac. After all, the 2026 season is not far off. “There are a few formalities we still need to finalize,” the Italian was quoted by The Mirror. “In consultation with the FIA, an official update will soon be released, but in principle, we only need to formalize what has already happened in practice. Cadillac will be ready to take on the other teams next year,” Domenicali assured enthusiastically.

“It’s not easy to join such a high-tech sport,” he added. “But Cadillac is willing to show that they are truly committed. General Motors is eager to become a manufacturer within Formula 1, as they are convinced of the technological platform our sport can offer. I am delighted that they have come on board and I look forward to seeing them compete for the championship alongside the other teams,” he concluded.
