Canadian Grand Prix Update: Hamilton Surges Ahead in Final Practice, Verstappen Battles Setbacks

June 8th, 2024, 7:32 PM

Despite the final free practice at the Canadian Grand Prix providing more answers than the previous two, questions about the real power dynamics in Montreal still linger. Is Lewis Hamilton truly as fast as he seems, and have Max Verstappen and Red Bull managed to get things back on track? The qualification round promises to be thrilling, regardless.

Fourteen, that’s the number of laps Verstappen completed on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit on Friday. Fluctuating conditions, technical issues with his Red Bull vehicle; after a Friday fraught with problems, the Dutchman was eager to get the RB20 on the track at the start of VT3 on Saturday.

Making progress is the initial focus. Everyone wants that, but a spinning Guanyu Zhou soon causes a red flag. Precious time is lost for the drivers, just like on Friday. In the over three-quarters of an hour that remain after the resumption, incidents (and rain!) are absent.

The newly asphalted track this year gets faster and faster, the drivers gather valuable data in both longer and shorter runs. Most of them do this first on medium tires, although Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll in the Aston Martin impress on hard tires and Williams drivers Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant on the soft.

The previously troubled Verstappen, meanwhile, follows his own program. He only switches to the softest tire in the final phase of the training. The reigning world champion and his team try out various things on mediums beforehand. On soft tires, Verstappen eventually drives to the second time, for what it’s worth. VT3 offers him more perspective than the sessions a day earlier.

Hamilton, however, impressively outperforms everyone. In the Mercedes, he creates a gap of several tenths, thereby causing a surprise. Whether the seven-time world champion can also do this in the qualification is the question, which will be answered later today.

The third free practice is scheduled for Saturday at 18.30 Dutch time.
