Carlos Sainz Discusses Limited Opportunities for Newcomers in Formula 1’s 2024 Season

June 17th, 2024, 9:20 AM

Carlos Sainz, a key player in the current transfer market, anticipates little change in the 2024 ‘silly season’. The Spanish driver sees few teams recruiting new talent, resulting in a lack of major reshuffling. This isn’t a new trend – Sainz believes it’s becoming increasingly difficult for young drivers to secure a spot in the premier class.

Carlos Sainz joined the Spanish-language Nude Project podcast this week. He discussed his role in Formula 1 and the future of the sport. He described how challenging it is for emerging talent to make a significant impact within the major teams. In a season where the grid has remained unchanged from the previous year, Sainz predicts another quiet ‘silly season’ for Formula 1.

Expectations for New Formula 1 Drivers in 2025

The Ferrari driver anticipates that by 2025, there will be at most two new drivers joining the ranks. This offers limited opportunities for all the young drivers eager to make their debut. Sainz wants to champion the next generation, who indeed need a ‘silly season’ to make it into Formula 1.

Two New Faces Next Year

“There are currently twenty drivers in Formula 1,” Sainz explained. “Next year, two new faces will be added. This means that eighteen people will simply stay in their place. Imagine how small the chance is that you are one of those nineteen- or twenty-year-old boys who are allowed to move up to the premier class.”

As for who these two new drivers will be, we can only speculate. Oliver Bearman, who has caught the attention of several teams after his performance in Saudi Arabia, is a popular option. Reserve driver Jack Doohan could also step in at Alpine sooner or later. The French racing team is indeed going to say goodbye to Esteban Ocon. Finally, 17-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli also seems to be heading for a debut.
