Williams team principal James Vowles has not regretted his decision to sign Carlos Sainz Jr for 2025, despite the strong performances of Franco Colapinto in the second half of last season. According to Vowles, Sainz has not only brought speed, but also a whole new dimension. The Spaniard’s wealth of experience is elevating Williams to a higher level.
Immediate Impact of Sainz’s Experience
Williams announced at the end of July 2024 that Sainz would be joining the team in 2025. The three-time Grand Prix winner spoke confidently about the project at the time. “It’s a challenge to bring Williams back to where it belongs, at the front of the grid, and I embrace it with enthusiasm.”
What Vowles did not know at the time was that he would be making another driver change a month later. Logan Sargeant had to make way and was replaced by Williams junior Colapinto, who scored points in his first races. However, there was no longer room for the young Argentine in the 2025 line-up.
We Now Have an Expert
According to Vowles, Alexander Albon is exactly the driver Williams needed. “He works incredibly well with Alex. Where we had to teach Franco a lot, we now have an expert in-house who has won races. This brings a whole new dimension to our team.” This impact was even immediately noticeable during the post-season test in Abu Dhabi, where Sainz made his first laps in the Williams FW46. “He immediately gave us valuable feedback on the aerodynamics and confirmed that we are on the right track for 2025.”
Colapinto Finds a Home at Alpine
Despite his potential, Colapinto had to look for another seat. Williams had already secured its future with Sainz and Albon. “Franco deserves a chance in Formula 1,” emphasized Vowles. “There simply was no room for him with us, but Alpine offered him an excellent opportunity to further develop.” The Argentine is even being tipped as a possible replacement for Jack Doohan. Vowles sees this as a confirmation of his talent. “I believe in Franco and I’m glad he gets the chance to show what he’s worth,” said Vowles.
