As the United States Grand Prix approached, the Formula 1 world was rocked by a controversy. An undisclosed team was accused of adding an ‘illegal’ feature to their car, allowing the ride height to be adjusted between qualifications and races, during the strict parc fermé rules. Red Bull has since confirmed that the car in question is the RB20, which will be modified in the near future.

In recent weeks, several teams complained to the FIA that Red Bull could adjust the ride height of the so-called bib from the cockpit. This specifically refers to the front part of the floor that protrudes slightly from under the car. As this function could potentially be used between qualifications and races, it is technically illegal. When parc fermé rules apply, only the front wing’s setting can be adjusted.

“Yes, this function exists,” a Red Bull spokesperson confirmed to BBC Sport. “However, it is not accessible once the car is fully assembled and ready to drive,” he assured. Nevertheless, the RB20 will be modified in consultation with the FIA. “In the many correspondences we have had with the FIA, this part was discussed, and we agreed to change it in the future.”
