The new regulations for 2026 have stirred up quite a controversy. While drivers complain about the weight and a presumed lack of speed, it’s ultimately up to the teams to deliver 20 competitive cars. Red Bull team boss, Christian Horner, emphasizes that there must be ample room for individual interpretations of the new regulations.
The FIA recently unveiled the new regulations for 2026. The plans to make the cars smaller and encourage overtaking in different ways received a lukewarm response. The organization stressed that the current plans – in consultation with the teams – are subject to changes. Christian Horner trusts that the FIA will make the right choices regarding the regulations, but also advocates for necessary freedom in interpreting the rules.
“Everyone will have to make compromises – I think it’s important that there is at least enough freedom to fill in the regulations ourselves,” Horner said during the race weekend in Canada. “We must prevent the cars from looking the same.” After all, Formula 1 is not a spec series, where all teams use identical material.
“The engineers are smart enough to find a good balance between the chassis and the engine,” said the Red Bull team boss. “If your engine is not the best, you should still be able to compensate with the chassis and vice versa. That balance is very important. Hopefully, we can try to ensure that – together with the FIA.”
