It was already known prior to the new Formula 1 season that Alpine driver Jack Doohan might have to worry about his seat. With the recruitment of reserve driver Franco Colapinto, top advisor Flavio Briatore significantly increased the pressure on the young Australian. After a disappointing weekend in Suzuka, an early exit seems closer than ever. While Colapinto is already testing with old Alpine cars, Doohan is facing criticism.

Shortly after the GP of Japan, images emerged of Franco Colapinto on the Monza circuit. The Argentine was testing with the A523 as part of the TCP program. A sign that Jack Doohan will have to make way sooner or later? According to analyst and former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher, it is. Partly due to Doohan’s heavy crash in the second free practice, and his lackluster race on Sunday, the Australian’s time could soon be up.

‘Too many mistakes, too little speed’

“He (Jack Doohan) is being put under pressure by his own team, but also by his driving behavior,” said Schumacher. “He makes too many mistakes and lacks speed.” The German also pointed to the first training session, in which Doohan was replaced by reserve driver and WEC champion Ryo Hirakawa. “Hirakawa was no less than Pierre Gasly,” Schumacher explained. “While Doohan, once he got in the car, immediately made a catastrophic mistake.”

“That will be analyzed from the team’s perspective,” Schumacher concluded. “At the moment, he is simply overwhelmed by the situation. The team will undoubtedly sit down with him – I’m curious what will happen then. It’s not certain that Jack Doohan will participate in the next race.” With Colapinto in the ranks, Alpine already has a competent replacement. The young Argentine made a big impression last year on behalf of Williams, although he also had a number of painful crashes. One thing is certain; he brings money to the table anyway. The lucrative South American market was already captivated by Colapinto in 2024.
