Sergio Pérez brought an unexpected thrill to the usually uneventful Monaco Grand Prix’s opening round. The Mexican driver fiercely defended his position against an unleashed Kevin Magnussen, which resulted in his RB20 spinning out and crashing hard into the wall. Pérez’s crash posed a threat to at least one photographer, who fortunately escaped unscathed.

Photographers were barely behind the barriers at the Massenet turn when Sergio Pérez’s car was violently launched into the wall. Amateur footage shows them having to dodge flying debris. Multiple sources confirm that one photographer was advised by stewards to go to the hospital. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries.

On social media, fans reacted with shock to the crash footage. Many users questioned whether enough attention was given to the safety of trackside personnel in Monaco. The organizers were already under heavy criticism – after the top ten remained unchanged after 78 laps, doubts were raised about the sustainability of this ‘boring’ race.
