On Sunday, Lewis Hamilton drove his final race for Mercedes. After twelve years of loyal service to the Silberpfeile, the seven-time world champion has chosen a new challenge with Ferrari in 2025. His farewell during the Abu Dhabi GP became an emotional moment. The final on-board radio exchanges between Hamilton and race engineer Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington and Toto Wolff speak volumes.

Despite a disappointing qualification – Hamilton started from the sixteenth spot due to ‘bad luck’ – the 39-year-old Brit drove an impressive race. He fought his way forward and eventually finished fourth, behind Lando Norris and the two Ferraris. In the final lap, he also managed to overtake teammate George Russell. During the cooldown lap, Hamilton said his first goodbyes to his team over the on-board radio and reflected on the past years.

“It’s been truly fantastic working with you,” began race engineer Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington. “Great job, mate. It’s always been a pleasure.” Bonnington, who has been the constant voice in Hamilton’s ear since 2013, will not be joining him at Ferrari. Team boss Toto Wolff added: “Lewis, that was a race of a true world champion. Incredible.

A Leap into the Unknown

“Thank you, that was truly special,” responded an emotional Lewis Hamilton. “The pleasure is all mine. What started as a leap into the unknown ended as a partnership for the history books. Together, we achieved things we could only dream of. I am incredibly grateful to everyone in the factory. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

“Thank you, Lewis,” responded Bonnington. “I am so grateful to have been a part of this chapter. Good luck with your next adventure.” Hamilton concluded his final on-board radio message with the words: “I love you all, truly.” Toto Wolff responded in turn with a remarkable promise: “We love you too. You will always be a part of the family. If we can’t win, we wish it for you.” This promises an interesting future battle with Ferrari.
