The FIA unveiled the brand-new regulations for 2026 on Thursday. One of the key points is the weight of the Formula 1 cars – the organization wants to shave off thirty kilograms from the cars. ‘Impossible’, thinks Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard expects that the cars, which will use a more advanced hybrid system, can only become heavier.

Fernando Alonso is the latest driver to express negative views about the new 2026 regulations. Lewis Hamilton was the first to voice his concerns about the weight of the car – the seven-time world champion believes it can all be much lighter. Williams’ Alexander Albon added that the cars could become ‘extremely slow’. Not really a step forward then.

While the FIA talks about smaller, lighter cars, Alonso doubts whether his Aston Martin will actually have slimmed down by 2026. In total, the teams need to reduce the weight by thirty kilograms. According to the Spanish veteran, an ‘impossible’ task. “That’s not feasible,” he said in the run-up to the Grand Prix of Canada.

“With the new power units, the cars are already twenty to thirty kilos heavier,” explained the two-time world champion. “So in fact, you then have to shave off sixty kilos from the whole package. That’s really impossible for the teams.” Alonso admits that there are a lot of brilliant technicians in Formula 1, but whether the goals for 2026 can be achieved is still a question.
