With over four hundred Grand Prix starts under his belt, Fernando Alonso is currently the most experienced driver on the grid. However, the Spaniard reveals that he tentatively views 2026, the year his current Aston Martin contract expires, as his final season in Formula 1. “It’s the moment of truth,” says the two-time world champion.

Fernando Alonso has been racing in Formula 1 since 2001, gaining a wealth of experience. However, the Spaniard has been waiting for a victory since 2013, but hopes that the 2026 regulation changes will push him in the right direction. Alonso, for one, tentatively views 2026 as his final season.

“The expectations will be high because new changes are coming. There will be a new car, changes to the regulations, a car made by Adrian (Newey),” Alonso tells the Chequered Flag podcast. The Spaniard then makes a statement that his fans may not be too pleased with. “Probably, or at least to start with, it will be my last season in Formula 1, because my contract ends in 2026. It’s the moment of truth.

2027?

The Spaniard immediately reassures his fans, not ruling out the possibility of still being seen in the premier class in 2027, the year he turns 46. “At this moment, I still have a contract for two more years. With my age, my motivation, I don’t know how it’s going to be,” Fernando Alonso is honest about the 2026 season. “If the 2026 season goes well and we’re enjoying ourselves and there’s a chance to race for another year, then I’m certainly open to that. I won’t close the door in advance, but I won’t start the season that way either.”
