Fernando Alonso has expressed his ambition to challenge Max Verstappen for the world title in the future. The Spaniard is convinced that the day will come when someone will break Verstappen’s dominance. He hopes to be that person – although he thinks this will only happen in 2026, when he will be driving an Aston Martin car designed by Adrian Newey.

Alonso Wants to Challenge Verstappen

According to Alonso, no one has really been able to ‘intimidate’ Verstappen in a title fight. “Everyone who has challenged Max so far has not really been able to make him nervous,” Alonso told DAZN. “Hopefully, I will get the chance one day to change this narrative.” With his sights set on 2026, when Aston Martin will be using Newey’s designs, the Spaniard hopes to enter the fray. “I hope I will be there in 2026 to take on Max,” added Alonso.

Praise for Verstappen

Alonso, one of the first drivers to personally congratulate Verstappen on his victory in Las Vegas, did not hide his admiration. “This must be a very special title for Max,” Alonso told the press. “The car may not have been as dominant this year as it was last year, so he has done a fantastic job. The best example of this is his amazing performance in Brazil.” According to Alonso, Verstappen’s season has been a masterclass. “This year shows how good he is. There is always something to learn from a driver like Max in these kinds of seasons.”

With his ambitions stated, Alonso seems determined to challenge Verstappen in the future. Whether the battle actually takes place in 2026 will depend on developments at Aston Martin and Newey’s design.
