The Spanish Grand Prix turned out to be a major disappointment for Fernando Alonso, especially as it was his home race. Both he and his teammate, Lance Stroll, crossed the finish line in twelfth and fourteenth place respectively. This resulted in no points for either driver or for Aston Martin. As Alonso watches the top teams pull away, he urges his team to further improve their car.

Alonso’s Struggles in the Current Formula 1 Season

Fernando Alonso had a promising start to the current Formula 1 season, consistently scoring points in the first six races and often outperforming his teammate, Lance Stroll. However, since the Grand Prix in Miami, the Spanish driver seems to be struggling. Apart from a ninth-place finish in Canada, points have been scarce for Alonso, who would prefer to be battling with his rivals at the front. The development of the Aston Martin appears to be stagnating, much like it did in 2023.

Alonso Expresses Discontent After Pointless Home Race

Following his scoreless home race, a dissatisfied Alonso spoke to the press. “I am somewhat disappointed that we did not score any points,” he responded. “But on the other hand, we did not deserve to finish in the top ten. We simply were not fast enough.”

‘Austria Will Be Equally Painful’

The two-time world champion knows exactly where things are going wrong for Aston Martin. “The balance in the corners is just not right, and that’s disastrous for your tires,” he explained. “So in fact, you have two problems – you lack the necessary speed and the tires wear out too hard. That really needs to improve. It’s frustrating, but we now need to focus fully on the race in Austria.”

However, Alonso doubts whether the Red Bull Ring can bring about a turnaround. “I’m afraid it’s going to be at least as painful – the circuit is very similar to Barcelona, especially with all those long corners,” said the Spaniard. Alonso seems to see it bleakly. “It will be a tough weekend, followed by yet another challenge in Silverstone.” The British Grand Prix is the last race in the first triple header of the season. “We must not let ourselves be knocked out,” Alonso concluded. “We need to talk less and work more.”
