Max Verstappen has not been penalized for his heated radio message during the season finale at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, in which he called the FIA stewards ‘stupid idiots’. The Dutchman expressed his frustration after receiving a ten-second time penalty for a collision with Oscar Piastri in the first corner. Although the comment drew considerable attention during the race, the FIA has decided not to take any further action.
‘Stupid idiots’ comment goes unpunished
The touch with McLaren driver Piastri occurred immediately after the start of the race. Verstappen was given a ten-second time penalty, a punishment he sharply criticized over the radio: “Can’t we make it 20 seconds? Stupid idiots!” Incidents in the opening round are usually judged with more leniency, which explained Verstappen’s frustration.
During the race weekend itself, the FIA did not take action in response to his words. This week, an FIA spokesperson confirmed that the matter is considered settled and that Verstappen does not have to fear any further sanctions.
Previous criticism and community service
The statement in Abu Dhabi was not the first incident where Verstappen did not hold back his words. During the Grand Prix of Singapore earlier this season, he was given community service after he had used coarse language during a press conference prior to the race. Verstappen will carry out the community service this week in Rwanda, where the FIA gala is also taking place. The Dutchman will collaborate with the local automobile club on an educational project to help children.
