Flavio Briatore, a notorious figure in Formula 1, could potentially make a comeback for Mick Schumacher. While Italian media previously reported that Briatore will play a significant role at Alpine, the German publication BILD suggests that the former team boss is already subtly pulling the strings. In this process, Briatore is reportedly working on a comeback for WEC driver Mick Schumacher.
In May, the Italian Corriere della Sera reported that Flavio Briatore is set to work as a ‘consultant’ for Alpine. The flamboyant businessman previously led the French racing stable, then known as Benetton and later Renault. BILD has since confirmed the renewed collaboration between Briatore and Alpine. The team from Enstone, which lacks organizational stability, could undoubtedly use all the help it can get.
Potential Comeback for Mick Schumacher
BILD speculates that Briatore could potentially facilitate a comeback for Mick Schumacher. The former Formula 1 driver is currently working with the WEC team of Alpine and will be racing in Le Mans this weekend. Team manager Bruno Famin has previously hinted that the young German is one of the options for 2025. Briatore would undoubtedly have a preference for Schumacher, having brought his father to the then Benetton in 1991. Schumi won two titles with the team in 1994 and 1995.
Mick Schumacher himself still dreams of a comeback in the premier class. The 25-year-old driver raced for the Haas team between 2021 and 2022, but has not been active since. In a conversation with The Independent, he admitted to still dreaming of Formula 1.
Flavio Briatore is a controversial figure within the sport. After winning world titles with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso, he was forced to leave the field in 2009. Due to his involvement in crashgate – the scandal where Nelson Piquet Jr. deliberately crashed his car into the wall – he was even temporarily banned from Formula 1.
