Former Haas team boss Günther Steiner criticizes Toto Wolff following his emotional comments about Lewis Hamilton after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. “If we can’t win, we wish it for Hamilton,” Wolff responded after the race. According to Steiner, this remark was primarily for show; the Mercedes executive simply wants to beat Hamilton next year.

During Hamilton’s farewell weekend at Mercedes, Toto Wolff spoke highly of the seven-time world champion. “If we can’t win, we’ll cheer for Hamilton,” said the Austrian. The seven-time world champion is set to move to Ferrari in 2025, hoping to compete for the championship there. “He certainly deserves that eighth world title, but of course, we have to focus on our own team, our own drivers, and our own brand next year,” Wolff concluded. “We will do everything we can to win.”

‘All for the Camera’

Günther Steiner, who led Haas until 2023, questioned the sincerity of Toto Wolff. In a conversation with the Red Flags Podcast, he said that Wolff was talking ‘nonsense’ for the camera. “He really doesn’t wish that for him,” Steiner responded. “Why should he be happy if Hamilton wins a title while his own team loses? He really doesn’t care who does win.

Steiner further emphasized his lack of sympathy for Lewis Hamilton‘s emotional farewell from Mercedes. During the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his departure was the talk of the day – the car of the former champion even received a special spot on the grid, next to the top three. “Am I supposed to get emotional about that? No,” Steiner laughed. “He chose to go to Ferrari, so there’s no need to play the victim afterwards. Didn’t he know ten months ago that he had signed a new contract? Of course, it was a fantastic collaboration. Hamilton has done a lot for Mercedes, but Mercedes has also done a lot for him. It was a win-win situation.”
