Andy Cowell, former engine boss of Mercedes, is set to become the new CEO of Aston Martin, as announced by the British team. Cowell will assume his new role at the British racing stable from October. The Brit was previously instrumental in Mercedes’ dominant era. With this move, Aston Martin bids farewell to its current CEO, Martin Whitmarsh.

Cowell served as the managing director at Mercedes from 2013 until his departure in 2020 following a reorganization of the engine department. The Brit had been with the German racing stable since 2004, and during his tenure at Mercedes, he helped the team win the drivers’ championship seven times and the constructors’ championship seven times. Now, the engineer is returning to Formula 1 as the CEO of Aston Martin.

Andy Cowell Joins Aston Martin’s Exciting Project

“I am thrilled to be a part of Lawrence’s [Stroll, team owner of Aston Martin] exciting project and look forward to working with the talented group of people that have been assembled,” Cowell says about his new appointment. “F1 has always been my passion and I am joining Aston Martin Aramco at an exciting time.” Aston Martin will start using Honda engines from 2026. The British team is currently still using Mercedes engines.

Aston Martin Aims to Become World Champion

The appointment of Cowell means that current CEO Martin Whitmarsh is leaving Aston Martin. Whitmarsh has been working as CEO at the team since 2021. “I want to thank Martin, who has played a key role in our growth phase as a company. Over the past three years, he has developed the team and helped us achieve a number of important milestones,” Lawrence Stroll said about the departing Whitmarsh. Stroll hopes that with the appointment of Cowell, his team is “well on its way to becoming world champion. Andy has my full support and will have all the resources to win.”
