The average race weekend attracts a fair share of big names, whether they’re mainstream celebrities or renowned sports enthusiasts. The Italian GP was graced by at least one Formula 1 legend in the form of former champion Kimi Räikkönen. The quirky Finn shared his perspective on all the new blood entering the sport, including his namesake Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Since Kimi Räikkönen bid farewell to Formula 1 in 2021, he is seldom seen in the paddock. However, he made an appearance in Monza. The former world champion was asked about all the new talents that have made their entrance or are yet to progress to the premier class. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the 18-year-old Mercedes prodigy and namesake of Räikkönen, was also discussed.

Excitement for New Faces in Formula 1

“Yes, I’ve heard,” said Kimi Räikkönen about the big announcement of the other Kimi. “It’s great. There are many new faces coming next year, many new drivers who have been signed for Formula 1. It’s good for the sport, and it’s also great to have an Italian in the championship. I think it’s good for everyone.” In addition to Antonelli, Australian Jack Doohan and Brit Oliver Bearman will also make their debut.

Transition to Formula 1 Now Easier

At just eighteen years old, Andrea Kimi Antonelli is by far the youngest driver on the grid. During a free practice session with Mercedes, a rookie mistake resulted in a crash at Parabolica. “I’m sure they know how to prepare him,” Räikkönen assured. “Nowadays, of course, they have simulators. When I started, there was no simulator; you just jumped in the car and went for it!”

“I think in many ways it’s now much easier to move up to Formula 1,” continued The Iceman. “You can do a lot of testing and prepare well. I wish them and everyone else the best!” Kimi Räikkönen is a celebrated Formula 1 driver; the 44-year-old Finn has driven nineteen seasons and a whopping 349 Grands Prix. In 2007, he became the last world champion with Ferrari.
