Upcoming Formula 1 talents will have to wait a bit longer to showcase their racing skills on the track. The FIA confirms that there will not be a rookie race on the calendar in 2024. Despite the concept being well received by many team bosses and committee members, the Formula 1 Commission decided that there is insufficient time to organize the event in 2024.

The F1 Commission met on Wednesday to discuss, among other things, the sprint race for rookies. “Although the concept received broad support, it was decided that the event would not take place in 2024 due to time and organizational constraints. Discussions will continue to formulate a potential concept and plan for 2025,” reads the official FIA press release.

The sprint race for upcoming Formula 1 drivers was intended as an extra test for rookies. This would allow the upcoming talents to compete against each other in a shortened race in Formula 1 cars. The race would take place after the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi, so teams wouldn’t have to worry about potential damage to their cars. The team bosses first discussed the idea in July.

2026 Regulations

In addition to the rookie race, the 2026 regulations were also discussed. A number of adjustments were made to the 2026 technical regulations in the areas of performance, aerodynamics, and safety. “These relate to an increase in the expected aerodynamic performance of the cars after extensive collaboration between the teams and the FIA in recent months,” according to the FIA.
