At the age of 21, Franco Colapinto has been summoned by Williams to participate in a free practice session during the race weekend in Great Britain. This Argentinian Formula 2 driver will replace Logan Sargeant in the first practice session. This is a ‘fantastic opportunity’ and a ‘historic moment’ for Colapinto; it’s been over twenty years since a driver represented Argentina in Formula 1.

Colapinto shares his anticipation for the weekend in Great Britain with Formula1.com. “It’s going to be a very special moment,” says the young driver. “Every driver hopes to get the chance to participate in a free practice session. I’m very happy and proud that Williams has given me this fantastic opportunity. Of course, it’s just a one-hour session, but Silverstone is the best track to put a Formula 1 car through its paces. I’m really looking forward to it!”

Colapinto’s Journey with Williams

The 21-year-old Argentinian has been part of the Williams training program since 2023 and made his debut in Formula 2 this year. In the last four races, he has been on the podium three times, including a first-place finish in the sprint at Imola. “It will be fun to compare the Formula 1 car with F2,” says Colapinto.

A Historic Moment

Franco Colapinto’s participation in the Grand Prix weekend is a historic event. The rich history of Formula 1 includes twenty-five Argentine drivers, among them the legendary world champion Juan Manuel Fangio. However, it has been a while since an Argentine participated in the premier class; Gastón Mazzacane was the last F1 driver from the South American country in 2001.

“I am grateful for all the support I receive from my home country,” says Franco Colapinto. “For me, it’s not additional pressure, it’s just good to know that you make people happy when you perform well. I am really going to enjoy being on the grid. This is a historic moment.” In addition to the Williams junior, Ferrari talent Oliver Bearman will also be back in action at Silverstone.
