Angela Cullen and Lewis Hamilton were inseparable for years. The New Zealander was appointed as his physiotherapist in 2016, but she would ultimately become one of the most important pillars of support for the Mercedes driver. Their collaboration came to an abrupt end last year, but Cullen has since found a new passion in racing. “I’ve fallen in love with IndyCar.”

Initially, Angela Cullen thought she would not return to motorsport after her journey with Lewis Hamilton. “When I said goodbye to Formula 1, I thought I would leave this world entirely,” the 49-year-old Cullen said in an interview with IndyCar. “In fact, I was basically retired. I took a year off last year, but then I got in touch with Marcus Armstrong.”

Armstrong’s Journey to IndyCar

Armstrong, a 24-year-old IndyCar driver from New Zealand, participated in the Formula 2 Championship between 2020 and 2022. However, last year he traded the training class for a new challenge with Chip Ganassi Racing in IndyCar. “I started working with him on his mental skills and other background aspects,” Cullen shared about her collaboration with Armstrong. “Then he asked me if I wanted to accompany him to a race. ‘Yes, of course!’, I responded.”

Angela Cullen’s Unexpected IndyCar Adventure

“Actually, IndyCar came onto my path quite suddenly,” Angela Cullen explained. “But it’s so much fun. The first race I attended was at Thermal Club – there weren’t even any fans present, but I still fell in love with the sport. The races are incredible, and so are the drivers. I was amazed by the expertise of everyone in the paddock. I’m not planning on leaving anytime soon.”
