Rumour has it that Formula 2 sensation Gabriel Bortoleto is set to join Sauber in 2025. However, the young Brazilian will initially serve in a reserve role within the Swiss racing team. Valtteri Bottas is expected to keep the seat warm for one more year before Bortoleto makes his official debut. When the team is rebranded as an Audi factory team in 2026, Bottas will have to step aside.

Our Swiss colleagues reported ahead of the Singapore race weekend that Valtteri Bottas has signed a new contract with Sauber. The Finn is allowed to stay in Hinwil for another year. Gabriel Bortoleto, a driver from the McLaren training program, seemed to be heading for a debut at Sauber, but in this case, he missed out.

However, it is now reported that Bortoleto will join Sauber next year. The leader in the Formula 2 championship would take on a role as a reserve driver, thereby securing a future seat in the premier class. As soon as Bottas’ new contract expires in 2026, the Brazilian talent is free to take over from him.

Before Bortoleto can commit to Sauber, he will first have to break his contract with McLaren. He has been training with the British racing team since 2023. Moreover, there are more contenders for a seat at the current Stake F1 Team. Franco Colapinto, who will have to make way for Carlos Sainz next year, is also looking for a more permanent contract. Williams team boss James Vowles has already pledged to lobby for the young Argentine at Sauber.
