On Saturday evening, George Russell secured a victory in Las Vegas. Starting from pole position, he drove to his second win of the season. While Max Verstappen clinched his fourth world title behind the Mercedes driver, Russell also claimed a spot in the history books. With his victory in Las Vegas, the 26-year-old Brit broke an age-old record.
Neutral Formula 1 fans had much to celebrate this year. No less than seven different drivers have won a race in 2024, a stark contrast to the previous season when only three different drivers stood on the top step of the podium. Moreover, Max Verstappen was responsible for nineteen of the twenty-two victories last season.
Unique Achievement in Formula 1
The fact that seven different drivers have won a race is not unique. The 2012 season, for instance, saw eight different winners. However, what makes 2024 special is that these seven drivers each have multiple victories. This is a unique achievement in the long history of Formula 1. The previous record dates back to 1981 when six drivers managed to win multiple times. World champion Nelson Piquet won three races, as did his rival Alain Prost. Alan Jones, Carlos Reutemann, Gilles Villeneuve, and Jacques Laffite each secured two victories.
Notably, of all the drivers in the top four teams – Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren – Sergio Pérez is the only one who has not won a race in 2024. This fact fuels further speculation about his position within the team. Below is an overview of all the winners in the current season. Who will be able to add another victory after the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi? Only time will tell.
