George Russell Clinches Victory at Austrian Grand Prix After Dramatic Collision Between Leaders

June 30th, 2024, 2:49 PM

Following the Austrian Grand Prix, George Russell was initially unaware of the dramatic events that unfolded in the race’s final stages. “This is incredible, but as a driver, you always dream of opportunities like this,” the British driver exclaimed, celebrating his second F1 victory since São Paulo 2022. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) finished second and third, respectively.

In the cooling down room, Russell (26) couldn’t suppress a smile as he watched the replay of the collision between race leaders Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, which ultimately led to his victory.

“I was comfortably behind Max and Lando in P3, but I saw on the big screens along the track that they were in a fierce battle,” George Russell explained. “You know that things can go wrong. I took full advantage of that. You dream of an opportunity like this. I’m happy for the team that we’re finally back on the top step of the podium.”

Russell hopes to carry this momentum into Silverstone, where the British Grand Prix is scheduled for next week. “Red Bull with Max and McLaren with Lando are still too fast for us, but we’re right behind them. Things have been going well in recent weeks. Hopefully, we can ride this wave a little longer.”
