The Monaco Grand Prix is the race of the year for some, while others see it as nothing more than a dull procession through the narrow streets of the Principality. Once the racing action concludes, the streets fill with the most exclusive state cars. It’s a sight to behold, but it’s still a parade, primarily about being seen. If you really want to get from point A to B quickly in Monte Carlo, the best way is by water.
The drivers and teams have long understood this, which is why they travel by boat to the paddock. This is done using so-called tenders, luxury boats up to 9 meters in length, which shuttle like upscale taxis through the harbor. They are not only allowed to dock in the paddock but also alongside the super yachts in the harbor.
Behind the Scenes with Rapsody Yachts
Rapsody Yachts, a Dutch boat builder, arranges the tenders for the Mercedes Formula 1 team during this weekend. A total of six boats are deployed to transport not only the drivers but also the many guests invited by the team for this special Grand Prix.
When this company invites you to take a ride in the harbor of Monaco, you don’t have to think twice. Along with my colleague Gwen Kleverlaan, I boarded the luxury boat. We were amazed as we sailed past the super yachts. They looked big from the quay, but from the water, they are even more impressive. The captain pointed out a massive cruise ship just outside the harbor, entirely chartered by Mercedes for its guests. It’s quite the expense.
A Day with the Stars
Earlier that day, they had picked up Lewis Hamilton and George Russell and dropped them off in the paddock. Russell, in particular, was friendly and up for a chat. As soon as they arrived at their destination, a large group of fans was ready to welcome them. The moment of tranquility on the water was over; the media day was about to begin.
Our brief moment of peace was also over. The media sessions with the drivers were about to start, and we were dropped off back on land. I can see why the drivers prefer to travel by boat; it’s not only faster, but it also provides a brief escape from the frenzied Formula 1 circus.
